Shade Variation Guide and Policy
Here is the industry-standard Shade Variation Chart (the V-Scale) used at Stone and Tile Depot to help you easily identify the level of color and pattern movement you can expect from your selected tiles:
V1: Uniform Appearance
Definition: Differences among pieces from the same production run are minimal to non-existent.
Aesthetic: Provides a smooth, consistent, and monochromatic look across the entire surface.
Best Application: Ideal for modern, sleek, or minimalist designs requiring solid, uninterrupted colors (like basalt or solid-color porcelain).
V2: Slight Variation
Definition: There are clearly distinguishable differences in texture and/or pattern, but they remain within similar, closely related colors.
Aesthetic: Offers a subtle hint of movement and depth without being visually overwhelming.
Best Application: Great for adding gentle character to a space while maintaining an overall unified tone (often seen in limestone or subtle porcelain prints).
V3: Moderate Variation
Definition: The colors present on a single piece indicate the expected palette, but the intensity and amount of color on each piece may vary significantly.
Aesthetic: Creates a highly dynamic, organic, and natural aesthetic that draws the eye.
Best Application: Perfect for rustic or transitional spaces; it is highly recommended to mix tiles from different boxes during installation to blend the tones (common with marble and travertine).
V4: Substantial Variation
Definition: Random color differences from tile to tile, meaning one tile may have totally different colors and patterns than the others in the same box.
Aesthetic: Produces a dramatic, bold, and entirely unique installation where the final look cannot be predicted by a single tile.
Here is a breakdown of the shade variations for our most popular materials:
Marble
Shade Variation: Typically ranges from moderate to high (V2 to V3), depending on the quarry and specific stone type.
Characteristics: Features striking veining and elegant color shifts, meaning no two tiles are ever exactly alike.
Best For: Creating unique, luxurious focal points in bathrooms, kitchens, and grand entryways.
Pro Tip: Always do a "dry lay" (arranging the tiles on the floor before setting them) to blend the natural veining beautifully across your space.
Travertine
Shade Variation: Generally high (V3 to V4), showcasing a wide spectrum of warm, earthy hues.
Characteristics: Known for its natural textures and tonal shifts, ranging from soft ivory and beige to deep walnut and silver.
Best For: Rustic or Mediterranean-style patios, pool decks, and warm interior living areas.
Pro Tip: Pull and mix tiles from multiple boxes during installation to ensure an even distribution of light and dark shades.
Limestone
Shade Variation: Usually low to moderate (V3 to V4), offering a much more uniform appearance than other natural stones.
Characteristics: Delivers soft, muted tones with minimal veining and occasional, subtle fossilized patterns.
Best For: Contemporary and minimalist spaces where a clean, cohesive, and calming look is desired.
Pro Tip: Seal your limestone regularly to protect its delicate, consistent color palette from everyday staining.
Onyx
Shade Variation: Exceptionally high (V4), known for dramatic, bold, and unpredictable color changes.
Characteristics: Features stunning translucent properties, vibrant bands of contrasting colors, and intense crystalline structures.
Best For: Backlit feature walls, statement countertops, and high-end decorative accents that demand attention.
Pro Tip: Embrace the extreme variation! The chaotic, contrasting bands are the primary appeal of this exotic and luxurious stone.
Basalt
Shade Variation: Mild (V1-V2), providing a highly consistent and uniform dark aesthetic.
Characteristics: A dense, fine-grained volcanic rock that primarily comes in solid, rich greys and deep blacks.
Best For: Modern, industrial designs, sleek exterior cladding, and minimalist bathroom floors.
Pro Tip: While the base color is highly consistent, choosing different finishes (like honed versus flamed) can subtly alter how light reflects off the stone, changing the perceived shade.
Porcelain
Shade Variation: Completely controlled, ranging from perfectly uniform (V1) to intentionally random (V4) to mimic natural materials.
Characteristics: Manufactured using high-definition printing technology to flawlessly replicate marble, wood, or concrete.
Best For: High-traffic areas, moisture-prone rooms, and projects requiring the look of natural stone without the maintenance.
Pro Tip: Always check the specific "V-rating" (Variation Rating) on your chosen porcelain product at Stone and Tile Depot to know exactly what level of color movement to expect in your boxes.

We do not take any responsibility for shade difference or any variation difference.
At Stone and Tile Depot, we want to ensure your project turns out exactly as you envisioned. Understanding how shade, color, and texture vary in both natural and manufactured materials is a crucial step in the design process. Please review our guidelines below regarding material variation.
1. Understanding Natural and Manufactured Variation
Inherent Beauty: Natural stones like marble, travertine, and onyx are quarried directly from the earth, meaning natural veining, mineral deposits, and color shifts are to be expected and celebrated.
Dye Lots: Manufactured products, such as porcelain and ceramic, are produced in batches; slight tonal shifts can occur from one production run (or dye lot) to the next.
Lighting Impact: The appearance of your tile can change significantly depending on the lighting in your space, including natural sunlight and the color temperature of your lightbulbs.
Screen Resolution: Digital photography and varying monitor settings can slightly alter the perceived color of the products featured on our website compared to real life.
2. Managing Samples vs. Full Orders
Sample Limitations: A single sample piece is intended to show the general color and texture, but it cannot capture the full spectrum of movement or variation present in a complete order.
Lot Variations: Because inventory moves quickly, the sample you receive may be cut from a different production lot or stone block than the full order you eventually purchase.
Current Inventory: We always fulfill your complete order from a single, consistent dye lot or stone crate whenever possible to minimize unexpected, extreme shifts.
Setting Expectations: Customers should always anticipate some degree of variation between the initial sample approved and the final delivered product.
3. The Importance of Blending During Installation
Dry Laying: We strongly advise doing a "dry lay," which involves arranging the tiles on the floor without adhesive prior to installation to visualize the overall aesthetic.
Mixing Boxes: Your installer should always pull and mix tiles from multiple boxes simultaneously to ensure an even distribution of light and dark shades across the surface.
Avoiding Clusters: Proper blending during the dry lay prevents awkward clusters of identical patterns or stark, concentrated color spots in one area of the room.
4. Our Policies and Best Practices
Ordering Overage: Always order at least 10% to 15% extra material to account for cuts, potential breakages, and the flexibility to set aside specific pieces with variations you may not prefer.
Installation is Acceptance: Once a tile is permanently installed, it is considered accepted by the buyer; no claims or returns regarding shade, color, or texture variation can be made after installation.
Pre-Installation Inspection: It is entirely the responsibility of the buyer and the installer to inspect the material for acceptable color and shade prior to beginning the work.
Consulting Professionals: Work closely with your licensed tile contractor to ensure the inherent variation of your chosen material aligns perfectly with your design vision.
